A divorce can be a grueling process. No question about it.

Reduce your stress level.

Here’s how:

Just be honest. Be upfront and candid with your lawyer about everything. I realize that sometimes it can be uncomfortable to reveal indiscretions or to admit to mistakes during the marriage. Nevertheless, these discussions allow for effective preparation and if needed, damage control. Honesty also extends to your financial condition. Do not understate income or overstate debt. Be transparent or expect to be penalized in court.

Don’t listen to family, friends or your hair stylist. No two divorce cases are identical. Don’t assume you are entitled to the same result your neighbor got. You wouldn’t let a lawyer cut your hair. Don’t get your legal advice at the salon.

Leave the emotions behind. True – easier said than done. But never let your emotions get in the way of settling your case fairly. Don’t hesitate to seek counseling or other professional help to you cope.

Forget the pots and pans. You didn’t retain a lawyer to argue about cookware and furniture. Prioritize your objectives and focus on what you really want to accomplish. Less anxiety and much more cost effective.

Let your kids be kids. This isn’t your kids fault. So, don’t involve them in the process. They are not messengers and they are not spies. If your kids stay happy, your happiness should follow.
