Despite the plethora of auto insurance commercials, Connecticut drivers must consider more than just insurance premiums when searching for auto insurance. Connecticut state law mandates that drivers obtain certain types of auto insurance to cover injured parties and damaged vehicles.

Following are some of the insurance coverage options for Connecticut drivers.

Liability coverage is for drivers and anyone with permission to operate the drivers’ vehicles. Liability coverage protects negligent drivers from paying for injuries in a car accident they cause. The minimum amount of liability coverage required by Connecticut law is $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident for bodily injury liability. Property damage liability requires a minimum of $10,000.

Uninsured or underinsured coverage protects individuals who are injured by drivers who either do not have insurance or whose insurance limits are less than the injured party’s damages. This insurance pays for any injuries and property damage that exceed the at-fault driver’s coverage. State law requires a minimum of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident.

Uninsured motorist coverage covers the difference between the level of coverage of the at-fault driver and the damage that has occurred to the injured party. The holder of the underinsured motorist coverage will be reimbursed for any property damage or other costs that were incurred that exceed the at-fault driver’s auto insurance limits, and are limited by the coverage limits held by the injured driver.

Collision coverage covers damage when a vehicle is struck by another vehicle, flips over or is hit by an object.

Comprehensive coverage covers damage to your vehicle due to vandalism, theft attempts, animals and weather conditions. Full glass coverage is also available to repair or replace a windshield that is damaged or cracked.

Understanding Connecticut car insurance coverage is critical if you were in a car accident but sometimes it is a little difficult to navigate.
