Rights and Obligations of Owning Animals in Connecticut

If your neighbor or landlord objects to your pets, do you know your rights? Are you in compliance with local ordinances regarding leashes or fences or a barking dog? What is your liability if your dog causes injury or property damage?

I practice in the evolving field of pet law and animal law. If you have a legal problem regarding your dog, cat or other animal, I can explain your rights and obligations under Connecticut law and potentially represent you in any legal proceedings.

Municipal Laws and Your Right to Keep Your Animals

Your pet or animal is subject to Connecticut statutes and local ordinances that can vary from town to town. For example, you must license a dog with the town clerk by June 30th of each year, or when a puppy reaches 6 months old. Failure to register your dog can result in fines and various problems if your dog is impounded or accused of biting someone.

I can advise and potentially represent you on issues in ownership and control of animals:

  • Licensing companion animals (dogs and cats)
  • “Dangerous breeds” (pit bull, Rottweiler, wolf hybrid, etc.)
  • Exotic pets (reptiles, big cats, llamas, ferrets, etc.)
  • Horses or livestock on property not zoned agricultural
  • Nuisance complaints (barking, running loose)
  • Local leash laws and tethering or confining your dog
  • Landlord-tenant disputes involving pets
  • Homeowner association restrictions
  • Impoundment of pets roaming at-large
  • Damage to other animals, people or property
  • Allegations of animal cruelty or neglect
