Family Relations and Child Custody Lawyer in Fairfield and Stamford, CT

In Connecticut, if a divorce or other Family Court matter involves a dispute over child custody, the case may be referred to Family Relations, also known as Family Services. Family Relations Counselors are court officers with specialized training in custody and parenting issues.  They will attempt to facilitate and mediate custody and other parenting issues to resolve the dispute without putting the children through an emotional, costly court battle. The conference performs two broad functions. First, to bring everyone together to mediate a possible resolution. If mediation fails, the Family Relations Officer takes it to a higher level. School officials, counselors and other individuals familiar with the family will provide input, so the officer can make a knowledgeable recommendation in the best interest of the child.  Depending on the complexity of the case, there may be an issue focused evaluation which takes 2 months to complete or a more comprehensive evaluation with a turn around time of 4 months.
